چکیده

The Cargo Express service of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB Cargo) offers fast overnight transportation of goods between selected train stations in Switzerland and is operated as a hub-andspoke system with two hubs. We present three different models for planning the operation of this service as a whole. All models capture the underlying optimization problem with a high level of detail: Traffic routing, train routing, make-up, scheduling, and locomotive assignment are all addressed. At the same time we respect hard constraints like tight service time windows and train capacities, and we avoid hub overloading. We describe our approaches for obtaining provably good quality solutions. Our algorithmic techniques involve branch-and-cut, branch-and-price as well as problem specific exact and heuristic acceleration methods. We conclude our study with computational results on realistic data. Revision: Friday 21 September, 2007 at 23:44

Evaluation of an Integrated Real-Time Rescheduling and Train Control System for Heavily Used Areas

Capacity bottleneck areas in rail networks are especially prone to delays due to the high number of train interactions and therefore require special attention. Increasing demand for service requires that even more trains will be operated within these areas. Therefore, the production process in these bottleneck zones must be adapted to the new traffic demands. To achieve this goal, a combination...

Assessing the usage and level-of-service of pedestrian facilities in train stations: A Swiss case study

A framework for assessing the usage and level-of-service of rail access facilities is presented. It consists of two parts. A dynamic demand estimator allows to obtain time-dependent origin-destination flows within pedestrian facilities. Using that demand, a traffic assignment model describes the propagation of pedestrians through the station, providing an estimate of prevalent traffic condition...

Challenges and Prospects of European Railways

In the present paper, challenges and prospects of the European railways, along with a proposal for a new strategy policy and specific measures are presented. The declining course of European railways concerning traffic and revenues is first analyzed. Conditions to introduce intra - modal competition are surveyed, among them separation of infrastructure fro...

Rescheduling and Train Control: A New Framework for Railroad Traffic Control in Heavily Used Networks

The paper explains a new advanced rail traffic management system that combines real-time rescheduling with an advanced train control tool being developed by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). The system is designed to increase network capacity and stability in heavily used mixed traffic networks while minimizing the cost of new ...

Cost}benefit Analysis in Railway Noise Control

A method to calculate the network-wide costs of realizing di!erent noise control possibilities and their bene"ts in terms of noise reduction for lineside inhabitants has been implemented in Switzerland. These studies have shown that an optimal cost distribution consists of spending 65% of the available "nances on rolling stock improvement, 30% on noise control barriers and 5% on insulated windo...
